Together these Charleston belles are driven to take control of their own lives as they are plunged into fear and chaos on their quest to fight for the rights of slaves. Against all odds, these feisty women fight to secure freedom and equality for those made powerless and persecuted by a supposedly superior race.Only when they’ve lost it all do they find a new beginning.Book 1 presents Willow and Whitney—and the reader—with the hardships the slaves endure at the hands of their white masters.

Book A Slave of the Shadows (The Livingston Legacy Book 1) Review :

A Slave of Shadows by Naomi Finley is a work of historical fiction set in the 1800s United States and the deep South. Willow is a young woman struggling to do what is right in a male dominated society. She grew up being the only daughter to a very headstrong and determined father. He raised her to believe that she had no voice, that men were in charge of all things, and that Africans were a lesser people than whites, if they could be called people at all. But, her relationship with the workers around the house caused her to believe that this was not the case. Risking the harsh punishments that her father would surely bring down on her, Willow became friends with this lesser class and grew to enjoy their company and opinions. Years later, she would find herself fighting for the rights of all people, no matter their skin color or place of origin. To follow this path, she had to sacrifice everything. But, only by doing this does she stand a chance of being able to gain the ability to experience a whole new world that was closed off to her. This was a good read for several different reasons. The author did a great job of painting the setting so that it came across as vivid and believable. It is clear that she did her homework and spent time learning about this era of history. The author has also created characters that are not only believable but also get the reader rooting for them. I really wanted to see Willow succeed, on both the small and big battles she had to make her way through. In addition, the story moves at a steady pace and keeps the reader interested. There never is a lull or a dull moment that throws off the flow of the narrative. The story does come own pretty harsh on men, but I can't complain about that too much since we most likely deserve it.
Naomi Finley lives in Northern Alberta. Her love for travel means her suitcase is always on standby while she awaits her next plane ticket and adventure. Her love for history and the Deep South is driven by the several years she spent as a child living in a Tennessee plantation house. She comes from a family of six sisters. She married her high school sweetheart and has two teenage children and two dogs named Ginger and Snaps. Creativity and passion are the focus of her life. Apart from writing fiction, her interests include interior design, cooking new recipes, throwing lavish dinner parties, movies, health, and fitness.A Slave of the Shadows is her first novel of the trilogy expected to be competed in full by 2019.Willow Hendricks, is a fearless, headstrong and progressive heroine who wants nothing more than to see the slaves on her father’s plantation freed. Having been raised without her mother, cared for by Mammy, and raised alongside Mammy’s daughter, Mary Grace, Willow does not share her father’s love for running their plantation, Livingston.Run-ins with cruel and sadistic slave catchers, the burden of a childhood trauma, and the forging of new relationships fill Finley’s historical fiction drama set in 1850s Charleston. She gives a different perspective if you relate it to other novels based in this era. It is not often that we see a heroine’s story played out minus a heavy focus on romance. The human spirit is the protagonist in this story.Willow Hendricks, a girl in her late teens, is as liberal and unyielding as a young woman could possibly be in the pre-Civil War South. Her disdain for seeing the slaves on her father’s plantation kept in servitude overcomes her, and that fire continues to build within her as the novel progresses. She is in no way shy about her feelings and, as violent as her father becomes at her opposition, she remains grounded and vocal.Willow's relationship with Mary Grace : How would things ever return to normal? What would Mary Grace’s new normal be? She would never be the same. The unspeakable things that had been done to her… Willow feared what it would do to a tender spirit like Mary Grace. “I swear on everything that is holy and pure, I will get justice for you, Mary Grace,” Willow said with a frantic determination. Mary Grace shuffled to her feet... Willow noticed the broken arm that hung limp by her side. Her snarl of rage didn’t sound human. "I will seek justice!" she swore silently.Willow’s relationship with James, the blacksmith on her father’s plantation, is precious and touching. He loves her as much as the daughter he lost to circumstances beyond his control. In return, Willow sees him as every bit the father her own is unwilling to be. James is ever-protective of Willow and knows their relationship is a source of concern for everyone around them should Willow’s father, Charles, realize how close they are. Each of the brief chapters written in third person describing the secondary characters’ backgrounds, adds necessary and interesting layers to the plot. The theme of the story revolves around equality and freedom for all:Willow’s first-person account allows the reader to get a glimpse inside her mind and feel the anguish she experiences regarding the unanswered questions she has about her father’s business and her mother’s death..Willow’s relationship with James, the blacksmith on her father’s plantation, is precious and touching. He loves her as much as the daughter he lost to circumstances beyond his control. In return, Willow sees him as every bit the father her own is unwilling to be. James is ever-protective of Willow and knows their relationship is a source of concern for everyone around them should Willow’s father, Charles, realize how close they are.Willow says:. “I believe plantation owners have come to rely on cheap labor to make an extra dollar. We have to change that. Machinery is the way of the future. “And all humans, white or colored, should have equal rights. They should be paid a fair wage for their work. They should be able to decide whom they wish to work for."The tension created by the early encounters with Bowden Armstrong serves to create an even more vivid picture of Willow, a tormented soul, find happiness.  Finley weaves a beautiful tale of genuine love and understanding while keeping her writing true to the era.Examining the title of the book: "A Slave of the Shadows":Willow waited in anticipation for the return of Jimmy, related to Mary Grace. She sent him to find the man that lived in the shadows. The man her father called Ben. The man who’d been the love of her mother’s life, and her protector.Through the window, Willow saw him walking toward the house. He was tall like her father, she realized. Minutes later he entered the study and removed his hat to reveal a full head of blond hair. Where her father's hair had been thinning, his remained intact. His eyes were dark and burned with a yearning too long restrained. But she also saw in him a humbleness, a tenderness, as he gazed at her. “Hello, Willow,” he said. Though his mannerisms were gentle and kind, his tone was steady and confident. “This is all new to me, as you are aware. I have come to see we were both slaves to the shadows.” , Willow said. “Please, I refuse to waste another day in the dark. I can’t go on like this. Please, tell me: who am I?” ."Like Father, he was attractive, but he was far removed from Father’s uptight manner. Ben Hendricks was open and unguarded. Maybe a lifetime spent being my overseer—my protector—had produced the love that radiated from his face. It filled me with hope and the desire to learn more about him."The secrets surrounding them go deeper than even Ben knew. They have barely scratched the surface.Events like-• the death of Willow's mother, Olivia;• Charles’s focus turned to protecting Willow with obsession. The love he had for Olivia and the loss of her tormented him• Visions of Olivia haunted Charles. It pushed him to want to make a change to this oppressed world they lived in.Charles picked up the torch Olivia left behind and carried it. It was a haven of hope in the midst of a land overtaken with hatred. At last Willow was free from the secrets that had enslaved her and felt uplifted by understanding.A very sensitive story of emotion.Scarlett Jensen5 April 2018
