Ebook About From popular Pacific Theatre expert Jeffrey R. Cox comes this insightful new history of the critical Guadalcanal and Solomons campaign at the height of World War II. His previous book, Morning Star, Rising Sun, had found the US Navy at its absolute nadir and the fate of the Enterprise, the last operational US aircraft carrier at this point in the war, unknown. This new volume completes the history of this crucial campaign, combining detailed research with a novelist's flair for the dramatic to reveal exactly how, despite missteps and misfortunes, the tide of war finally turned. By the end of February 1944, thanks to hard-fought and costly American victories in the first and second naval battles of Guadalcanal, the battle of Empress Augusta Bay, and the battle of Cape St George, the Japanese would no longer hold the materiel or skilled manpower advantage. From this point on, although the war was still a long way from being won, the American star was unquestionably on the ascendant, slowly, but surely, edging Japanese imperialism towards its sunset.Jeffrey Cox's analysis and attention to detail of even the smallest events are second to none. But what truly sets this book apart is how he combines this microscopic attention to detail, often unearthing new facts along the way, with an engaging style that transports the reader to the heart of the story, bringing the events on the deep blue of the Pacific vividly to life.Book Blazing Star, Setting Sun: The Guadalcanal-Solomons Campaign November 1942–March 1943 Review :
The first book I read about Guadalcanal was the Landmark Series of Guadalcanal Diary by Richard Tregaskis in the mid-1950s. I have since read dozens more about the Solomon Campaign. Mr. Cox presents new information of what I thought was a very familiar story. He has taken the time to highlight, by name, soldiers and sailors of enlisted ranks, whose contributions had a major impact on the outcome of many battles. These men are rarely mentioned and named.I found the writing to be fresh and lucid, keeping me interested from start to finish. Many other books which I have read on this subject got bogged down in technical issues which numb the mind. Mr. Cox has kept the narrative moving and at a quick pace, but not so I felt like I was being left behind.I have just purchased the Kindle editions of Rising Sun, Falling Skies and Morning Star, Midnight Sun. I anticipate more of Mr. Cox's excellent writing. 3/23/21: Warning as I was unable to finish the book due to the author's cynical & snarky commentary on events & individuals of the period. As a retired National Security analyst & amateur historian, one practice I always followed was to respect the topic I was covering & leave myself--and particularly my sentiments--out of the story. IMHO the author's disrespect & sentiments are at center stage in Blazing Star, Setting Sun as much as what happened in the Solomon Islands from 1942-43.4/6/21: Well I finished the book & raised my rating to 3 stars but still would not recommend it. Much of the book is a rehash of Hornfisher's "Neptune's Innferno," except the latter is more complete, better written, & without the repeated sarcasms. Another reviewer noted the choppy narrative resulting from mixed up chronology which also makes the book hard to follow. In short: Over rated.
